The Academy Is…

Posted in Events, Photos, Random, Uncategorized by Derek on October 29, 2008

On Sunday my girlfriend and I saw The Academy Is and We The Kings play at The Ogden Theatre. The opening bands were Hey Monday and Carolina Liar. It was a fun time besides having to stand in line for over an hour with a bunch of whiny teenage girls….. Below are a few photos I took with my Sony point & shoot camera. Enjoy!

This week I had the chance use a Mamiya 645 Medium Format Camera. It’s not too shabby of a camera. The images below were taken with the Mamiya using Kodak TMAX 100 & 400 film.

On Monday I got to see one of my favorite bands perform at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre. I brought along my little Sony Cybershot point and shoot camera to see if I could get a few photos of the concert. To my surprise the camera didn’t do too shabby for there being hardly any light to work with.

Democratic National Convention – Denver 2008

Posted in DNC, Events, Photojournalism, Photos, Random by Derek on August 26, 2008

Yesterday I was able to photograph the protests going on in downtown Denver. Throughout the whole day it was pretty mellow. The most interesting part of the day happened by the 16th street mall around 7 p.m. I am still not sure what actually happened there but to my knowledge there was either a “b” threat or a riot got out of control. When it happened I was half way up the 16th street mall when I saw the police go zooming by on their bicycles, another photographer and I ran down toward the end of the street just in time for police to say that we need to get out of there now! The riot police started putting on their gas masks and we knew what was going to happen next. They started pushing the big crowd of people back to the other end of the block and other police started dropping tear gas. Some of the tear gas caught up to me, it was not fun ingesting some of that stuff.

Below are some photographs I took throughout the day. You can click on any of the photos to view them larger.

A man from Alaska holds up a cross and a sign that says, “Vote 4 Jesus”.

A protestor speaks about Guantanamo Bay to a group of people in Civic Center Park.

A woman does an interview with a news station while marching down the 16th Street Mall.

Police move a crowd back while SWAT and other police arrive on the scene.

Riot Police block the street at 16th and Tremont.
